I need to know the difference in projectors. What does resolution, contrast and brightness each have to do?
When Resolution goes from WXGA 1280X800 to Native XGA and the contrast ratio goes from 500:1 to 1400:1 as well as Brightness goes from 2000 lumens to 3000 high bright, what does this mean and how do I select what is the right projector to purchase?
The higher the resolution the sharper the picture. The higher the contrast the more real the picture looks (although unless you have a dark room anything much more than 2000:1 is wasted). The higher the brightness the larger the screen can be and/or the more ambient light there can be in the room (However, note comment about contrast).
The right projector is the one that offers the features and image quality you want for the price you can afford. There are performance related features (such as you identify) and convenience features (e.g. lens shift, multiple inputs). The best projectors have both. That said, all projectors have pros and cons, so you really have to define your needs THEN pick a model.
Today, a 1080p projector can be had for as little as $2000. If that is too steep look for a 720p projector (one with vertical resolution of 720 or more lines) ... they still give a good picture but cost about $1000-$1200.
