What is a better first/all-around lens for my Canon 7D?
I am considering the two EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens Vs. EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Zoom Lens? However, I am open to all suggestions
Those are two different lenses, and each could be used for different things. There really is no "all-around" lens for a DSLR, that is why there are so many different lenses available. That is why I recommend people that are new to DSLRs get an entry level camera so they can build a better lens collection while they learn to use their camera. After a couple of years when they can use that camera to its fullest potential, then they can upgrade the body and will already have the lenses to go with it (another reason to only buy EF and not EF-S glass, should they get a full-frame camera).
The 24-105 has a longer focal length but it will not handle low light as well as the faster 17-55. The lower the f/stop number, the "faster" it is (meaning it handles low light better by allowing more available light into the camera).
I have 6 lenses for my camera (and more to come) and each has its own purpose.
