Can someone explain this to me?
Why would you carry a 9mm, 40 S&W, .380, .32, .22 etc. over a .45? I can get a .45 just as compact as a 9mm or .40. The rest of them are just too small for me to trust my(or anyone else) life on. If you can't hit a target near point blank with 8 shots you shouldn't have a firearm anyway. Look at the special forces members who call the M9 9mm a POS and trade it for a .45 1911, they certainly aren't "amateurs".
I don't need a stop and frisk gun. In my state I can shoot someone for jumping me, very little questions asked. Try that in your state.
With modern s/d loads a 40 cal or 9mm will have the same knock down as the 45 (within 3%). The only advantage of the 45 is that it has less recoil than a 40 cal. And a 9mm even less than that.
There is nothing wrong with a 45- but it is not the best carry caliber.
The Military changed the 1911 for the M9 for a tactical reason. Had that been later discovered to be a mistake- they would have changed back. The M9 puts 2x the number of bullets on the battlefield as the 1911. There may be specific situations where the 45 may have enough advantage to choose it over the 9mm.
